The Paton-Churdan Rockets and the Adair-Casey Bombers met for the second time this season, this time in Adair. The results were the same; the P-C girls lost and the boys won.
The girls fell behind the #9 ranked A-C Bombers early and trailed 20-8 after the first quarter. The Rockets outscored the Bombers in the second quarter and shortened the gap to six points at 31-25. The Bombers were hot in the third quarter and they led 50-35 at the end of the quarter. Final score was 62-39.
Jenna Beyers was the Rockets’ lead scorer at 13 points, as Carleigh Paup was held to only 11 points, less than half her per game average. Kasey Lane scored and Sydney Koch scored five each, Grace Geisler scored three and Megan Carey scored two.
Beyers also led in rebounds with six. Geisler had five rebounds. Koch lead in steals with four and she had four assists. Lane and Paup had three blocks each.
“We did a nice job of battling back and making it a tight game at the half,” coach Chris Petersen said. “Unfortunately, they controlled the second half and took advantage of our turnovers. We played only one solid quarter of basketball and that is difficult to overcome when you play a top 10 team in the state.”
The loss put the girls at 8-6 overall while the Bombers are 13-1.
The boys topped the Bombers by a 61-33 score. The Bombers scored just six points in the first quarter to the Rockets’ 14. Score at halftime was 26-17 for the Rockets.
The Rockets scored eight unanswered points to build their lead. The score after the third quarter was 44-24. The fourth quarter began with another nine answered points for the Rockets, as the Bombers went five minutes without scoring.
The Rockets had three players in double figures. Noah Juergensen scored 18 points, Jake Berns had 16, Charlie Minnehan scored a career high 13 points, and Joe Towers scored 12 points. Jacob Thompson scored two points and Blake Delaney scored his first varsity point.
Juergenson had 10 rebounds, six blocks and four steals. Berns had six rebounds and two steals. Towers led in assists with seven and added three rebounds and four steals.
The boys are now 10-4 on the season.
